I am currently entering data into our region/appellation table. In an effort to maintain data quality we are going to try to maintain this data ourselves rather than allowing users to do so. For the alpha site we will have all the French AOC’s available, so that’s what I’m working on today.

The INAO (Institut National des Appellations d’Origine) is the French organization in charge of approving, monitoring and documenting French appellations. They have the appellation decrees available on their website and this is the documentation I am using as a reference (original sources, blah-di-blah). If you have never actually read the description of an AOC (Appellation d’Origine Controlée), you are missing out on a special experience.

Art. 1er. - (Ajouté, D. 30 sept. 1949, art. 1er). - Seuls ont droit ? l’appellation controlée ” Vougeot ” les vins rouges et blancs, qui, répondant aux conditions ci-dessous, ont été récoltés sur les territoires suivants du département de la Côte d’Or : SECTION CLIMATS OU LIEUX DITS CONTENANCE h. a. c. Clos de Vougeot 50 22 40 Les Petits-Vougeots 5 82 85 La Vigne-Blanche ou 1 87 95 le Clos-Blanc de Vougeot Les Cras 4 39 05 Le Village ou Clos du Prieuré 1 62 63

(Dernier alinéa modifié, D. 16 mars 1963.) - Pour les vins produits sur les parcelles classées en ” premier cru “, l’appellation communale susvisée pourra être completée soit par le nom du climat d’origine, soit par l’expression ” premier cru “, soit par l’un et l’autre. Le nom du climat d’origine devra être placé après celui de l’appellation communale et imprimé en caractères dont les dimensions, aussi bien en hauteur qu’en largeur, ne devront pas dépasser celle de l’appellation. Pour les autres climats d’origine non classés en ” premier cru ” dans les conditions prévues ? l’alinéa précédent, le nom du climat pourra être adjoint ? celui de l’appellation communale. Dans ce cas, il devra être imprimé en caractères dont les dimensions, aussi bien en hauteur qu’en largeur, ne devront pas dépasser la moitié de celle de l’appellation. Les vins issus du climat ” Clos de Vougeot ” (ayant fait l’objet d’un décret spècial de contrôle du 31 juillet 1937), qui ne rempliraient pas les conditions prescrites pour cette appellation pourront être désignés sous l’appellation communale ” Vougeot “, suivie de l’expression ” premier cru “. Les experts désignés par le comité directeur de l’institut national des appellations d’origine des vins et eaux-de-vie établiront la liste des climats classés en ” premier cru ” et reporteront sur les plans cadastraux le territoire ainsi dèfini. Cette liste et ce plan seront, après approbation par l’institut national des appellations d’origine, déposés ? la mairie des communes intéressées.

(formerly modified D. March 16, 1963) For wines produced in parcels classified as “First Growth” the communal appellation, described here, may be followed either by the name of the originating area [climat] or by the expression “first growth”, or by both. The name of the originating area should be placed after the that of the community appellation and printed in characters, whose size, both in height and width, should not exceed those of the community appellation. In this case it should be printed in characters whose size, both in height and width, should not exceed half of those of the appellation. Wines produced in the area “Clos de Vougeot” (subject to the special decree of July 31, 1937) that don’t fulfill the conditions proscribed for this appellation may be designated by the community appellation “Vougeot”, followed by the expression “premier cru”. Experts designated the director of the INAO will establish a list of areas classified as “premier cru” and copy this list onto the official maps thereby defined. This list and map will, after approval by the INAO, will be registered in the city halls of the concerned communities.
