On Tuesday January 22nd 2008, Jean Thurston, my beloved grandmother left us. I am grateful that I was able to travel home and be with her, tell her how much I loved her and say good-bye. I was lucky enough to arrive in time to hear her rebukes for not coming home for Christmas, for not giving her more great-grand-children, for living so far away. My grandma was not exactly a doting matriarch, but she made it clear how much she loved us all. She was sassy, independant and sharp-tongued and I wouldn’t have wished her any other way.

She left her four children, 11 grandchildren, and four great-grand-children with many happy memories. We will miss her dearly.

Merry Christmas and joyeuses fêtes to all our members and readers! I hope that the holidays find you all enjoying fabulous food and wines.  Our highlight so far has been a Lafon Meursault-Charmes we enjoyed with foie gras and fresh black truffles last night. Mmmm delicious!

Chez nous, quand on boit du vin la plupart du temps c’est pour accompagné un repas. Nous aimons beaucoup déguster, goûter, et boire du vin, mais nous adorons la bonne cuisine aussi. Pour nous l’accord est d’un bon vin avec un plat bien preparé est un grand plaisir de la vie. Alors excusez-moi pendant que je fais un voyage dans le monde de la cuisine…

Inspiré et invité par Estèbe expatrié français habitant en Suisse, je me joins aux bloggeurs de cuisine pour faire une expediton dans le sud de le France qu’ils ont appellé “Dessine-moi un cassoulet“. Le défit est de faire un cassoulet et publier les résultats sur son blog. Pas du tout facile. Un cassoulet fait maison prend quelques jours et des courses chez plusieurs fournisseurs. Est-ce qu’on fait le confit nous-mêmes ? Non ! Sinon on doit peut-être faire les saucissons aussi, et après quoi ? On va élever le cochon. Je dis non, faut pas pousser mémé dans les orties.

Alors nous avons démarré dimanche soir et nous avons mangé mercredi. Voilà quelques photos.

Les ingrédients. On n’a pas réussi à trouver les tarbais, alors c’était des lingots.

Ironiquement on a utilisé un livre américain de recettes françaises publié par le magazine Saveur. Le résultat était délicieux, mais un peu sec (j’ai ajouté de l’eau à ce qu’on voit dessus) et trop cuit. Je le ferais encore mais avec les vrais tarbais, et en le cuisant 3-4 heures en tout au lieu des 6-7.

Pour le vin, on a tenter un Fronton que était en dessous de la limite de l’acceptable, et un Minervois qui était très plaisant.

The berries have been harvested and transformed into nascent wine. The vines, relieved of their heavy load, are quietly preparing for their long winters’ rest. Sap is running from the leaves and shoots down into the root reserves, causing the leaves to discolour and soon fall from the vine. For the moment, the vignerons are enjoying a much-deserved break between post-harvest vineyard treatments and the work of late winter pruning.

Here and there small “second crop” clusters of grapes, unripe and left behind during harvest, now make an intensely sweet and tasty treat for those lucky enough to take a morning stroll through the vineyards.
